James, Volunteer in a Hiking Club

What does volunteering mean for you?

Volunteering is a great way to get involved with my community. I have learned new things, made new friends and know that I am helping someone.
Why did you want to volunteer?

I had some free time and I am doing well in work and life at moment so I felt that I should give back to the community. Even tough I grew up in Finglas and volunteer in Blanchardstown, I don’t think a name makes a difference.

What was your role as a volunteer?

My role is to help youngster to understand there own abilities and how to do things by themselves, and to be there to encourage and guide them in the right direction every step of the way.

What did you gain by volunteering?

Firstly it opened my eyes to hiking as I had never done this before. I only see now the beauty in the mountains and hills that have been around me all of my life. Secondly, knowing that I am now able to let other youngster get the chance in their young lives to see the things that I didn’t when I was their age.

What would you like to say to people who would like to volunteer?

Once you volunteer you will quickly learn that giving of one's self has its own rewards. You won't get paid, but the feeling you get helping others is something worth more than money. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
