Michael McGloin

inVolunteer Stories
Michael has been voluntering with the Mayo North Promotions Office, a tourism destination development and marketing office for nearly two years.

Michael was initially attracted to the role as he had completed a business course in GMIT, Castlebar and was looking for work experience in a clerical capacity.

He had an interest in writing articles, using CMS (content management systems) for editing websites, SEO, Google analytics and other web development activity. Mayo North, a community-led destination development and marketing office had advertised a volunteer role for assistance with digital marketing and website development, so the fit was a good one!

Michael has found the voluntary work very interesting and it has been a great opportunity to upskill and give something back to the community. His typical day is 6 hours, once a week on a Wednesday. He enjoys meeting people and helping out with festivals and events. His volunteering has given him a greater insight in to how technology can be used to fulfil business goals and to increase the potential in the tourism sector, by promoting the area as a tourism destination.

Michael feels his volunteering has given him valuable experience which he hopes can further enhance his future career either within this organisation or another. He would encourage other people to volunteer and states: “It is an exhilarating experience to be giving something back to the community without financial reward and it is also good to be in a position to be able to interact with the community at this level, without the constraints of time and money. This is my personal account and experience of volunteering.”
