Voluntary and community groups urged to avail of volunteer resources

Record numbers of highly skilled volunteers register amidst Covid crisis

The appetite of Mayo people to offer voluntary assistance within their communities amidst the Covid-19 crisis remains unabated, with over 300 volunteers registering in recent weeks with Mayo Volunteer Centre. Now, organisations with specific needs are being urged to contact the Centre to seek assistance and provide opportunities for volunteers with skills and qualifications in a wide range of disciplines. From graphic design to psychology, shop and drop to assisting on Aware helpline etc, there is an opportunity like never before to avail of specialist expertise and skills to enhance your organisation.

With offices in Ballina and Castlebar, Mayo Volunteer Centre is also working closely with Mayo County Council’s Community Engagement Section by co-ordinating the community volunteer effort. As well as on-the-ground volunteering opportunities, there are also opportunities to contribute remotely, where volunteers can work from home.

Mayo Volunteer Manager Kathy Rowland said: “It’s been an incredibly busy time for us, and it is a reflection on the generosity of people and the strong community spirit that exists in Mayo that we have so many volunteers seeking to help. Many organisations are under pressure at the moment and there are ways in which we can help to lighten the load, so please don’t hesitate to pick the phone and speak to one of our volunteer placement officers who can connect you with volunteers who may be able to help.”

Safeguarding of the vulnerable and of volunteers themselves is also vital during this time, and Mayo Volunteer Centre also provides access to Garda Vetting. Organisations wishing to access vetting for volunteers and staff can contact the centre for information.

Mayo Volunteer Centre is a charitable organisation and part of a national network which was established to support the network of volunteers and volunteer services across the country. Supported by Moy Valley Resources IRD in Ballina, it works with many voluntary groups throughout Mayo including St. Vincent De Paul, Hospice, Aware, Age Action and Meals on Wheels organisations, as well as businesses who wish to include volunteering as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility policies.

Organisations seeking help can contact Mayo Volunteer Centre on 096 71444 or email info@volunteermayo.ie. Individuals who would like to offer volunteer assistance can register online at www.volunteermayo.ie.
